PRACTICE TRAVEL COMPENSATION POLICY
NEW - January 2009 At the AGM, the Highland Knights agreed to apply this policy only to Under 14 teams for the 2009 summer season, and to further assess the results/policy at the end of the season.
Assumptions:
The Highland Knights Soccer Club is a regional soccer club that encourages participation of players from all communities within the region. The geographic expanse of the region from Amherst to Antigonish (or further in some outlying communities) creates an extreme unbalance in travel costs for players from the edges of the region compared to players in the centre of the region.
The rational for this policy is that players in the Pictou County and Colchester County areas face much lower travel costs/travel times to participate in team practices and games.
This policy outlines a ‘compensation’ approach from those with less practice travel to those with more practice travel that can be applied to help balance this impact.
Therefore:
The Knights will annually set a ‘base travel compensation rate’ that will be used to calculate amounts to be paid by players who are required to pay a travel compensation amount as set out in this policy.
For the purposes of this policy, the Club recognizes four ‘areas’ to represent that region for the purpose of this policy. The four ‘areas’ will be defined as one of the following towns: Amherst; Truro; New Glasgow; Antigonish. The area closest to the home residence of a player shall be considered that ‘players area’.
Where players from outside the region covered by the Highland Knights choose to play for the Club, the ‘area’ for those players will be considered to be the closest of the four recognized areas for this policy.
The total amount of travel compensation to be paid by a player will be determined by his/her team weekly practice locations in relation to ‘players area’.
Where one or more weekly practices are held in the ‘players area’:
· For practices held in the ‘players’ area once a week, the player shall be required to pay a compensation amount, being the ‘base travel compensation rate’.
· For practices held in the ‘players’ area twice a week, the player shall be required to pay a compensation amount, being double the ‘base travel compensation rate’.
Where no practices are held in the ‘players area’, each such player shall be awarded a number of ‘credit points’ and shall receive a portion of the total compensation amount collected for that players team:
· For practices held in an area adjacent to the ‘players’ area once a week, the player shall be awarded one credit point.
· For practices held in an area not adjacent to the ‘players’ area once a week, the player shall be awarded two credit points.
· The Total Compensation Amount collected for the team will then be divided equally by the total number of Credit Points awarded to players on the team to determine a ‘Credit per Point’ amount
· Each player will receive his/her number of credit points times the ‘Credit per Point’ amount.
Any compensation amounts collected and amounts distributed within any team by this policy will be equal, creating a $0 net loss/profit in overall club finances (overall Discounts granted will be balanced with equal collected Compensation Amounts)
Sample Compensation Amounts:
*examples shown are based on a ‘base travel compensation rate’ of $50
Example 1
- Practice locations are Truro and New Glasgow

New Glasgow |

Antigonish |

3 |

$175 (3 x $58.33) |
Notes:
- 14 players paying $50 Levy = $700 Levy total
- Truro/New Glasgow players receive no ‘credit points’ since at least one practice in their area.
- Amherst players have 1 ‘adjacent’ practice for 1 credit point, and 1 ‘not adjacent’ practice for 2 credit points
- Antigonish players have 1 ‘adjacent’ practice for 1 credit point, and 1 ‘not adjacent’ practice for 2 credit points
- TOTAL CREDIT POINTS = (2x3)+(2x3) = 12
- CREDIT PER POINT = $700/ 12 = $58.33
Example 2
- Practice locations are in New Glasgow

New Glasgow |
6 |

|
|
Antigonish |

1 |
None |
$33.33 (1 x $33.33) |
Notes:
- 6 players paying $100 Levy = $600 Levy total
- New Glasgow levy fee is double since both practices are ‘home’.
- Amherst players have 2 ‘not adjacent’ practice for 4 credit points
- Antigonish/Truro players have 1 ‘adjacent’ practice for 1 credit point
- TOTAL CREDIT POINTS = (2x4)+(10x1) = 18
- CREDIT PER POINT = $600 / 18 = $33.33
